Grades 3-8, weekly sessions
Horseback Riding Camp will increase and refine your riding skills while teaching fundamentals of horse care and stable management. Camps are limited to 24 riders, and divided into lesson groups of four to six individuals according to riding ability and interest. This allows our Camp Counselors and Teaching Assistants to cover material thoroughly with each lesson group. During the morning while two groups are riding in a lesson, the other groups participate in activities involving basic horse care, safety, grooming and bathing as well as fun horse related activities such as vaulting on a barrel and art projects. After two hours the groups switch places. Campers can choose either English or Western Riding, both described below. Afternoons are filled with fun activities that could include swimming at the Rec Pool, tours around campus, games, activities, and more. When registering, please indicate how much riding experience you have had. If you have questions about which camp is appropriate, please call Youth Programs at 530.752.2955.
English Riding
Lessons will include how to catch, lead, groom, and saddle a horse in preparation for English riding. Emphasis will be placed on safety. Mounted instruction will focus on proper rider position, control of the horse, and working as a team
Western Riding
Lessons will cover basic safety and grooming techniques and tacking a horse for western riding. Mounted instruction will focus on proper rider position, control of the horse, and working as a team.

This two-hour evaluation will include tacking and grooming the horse as well as different riding skill tests to place youth in the correct camp. If you have your own horse and plan to trailer into camp, you may leave your horse on the property during the day’s activities. An evaluation can be scheduled by calling the Equestrian Center at 530.752.2372.
